Ryan Kent Jr. is back with another Push to Pass on Track, this time with Cooper Tire Indy Lights driver Spencer Pigot after Lights practice 1 and 2 at Mid Ohio Sports Car Course.
When asked about changing conditions, Pigot replied that the track loses traction in the afternoon heat. Plenty of track action from the fourth other classes of car on track coupled with the higher temperatures in the afternoon are the two main contributors to this track characteristic. Pigot mentioned that many teams will use a different setup between the morning and afternoon sessions.
“For qualifying, I think we’re real excited, real confident we could be on the [hopefully] pole position”
The Mazda powered Dallara IL-15 is a new car for the reigning Cooper Tire Pro Mazda Champion, but for 2015 in the Cooper Tire Indy Lights series as well. When asked about the car change, Pigot references the ample power, downforce, and superior handling of the new car.
“The whole track feels faster in the car. It’s got a ton of horse power. Just approaching the corner is so much quicker, but you’re not really braking any earlier; not letting off any more for the corners…”
When asked about his goals for this weekend, Pigot says he’s aiming for a double win. He’s 18 points back from current leader Jack Harvey. Pigot plans to attack Mid-Ohio aggressively to reclaim some of the points he’s lost this season.
With the season finale over a month away at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Pigot doesn’t sit at idle as he dives into driver training among other activities. He exercises a thorough training regimen at Pit Fit Training in Indianapolis. Pigot also engages with his engineers and mechanics at Juncos Racing.
Look for the Mazda Road to Indy Cooper Tire Indy Lights to qualify tomorrow at 8:00 AM Eastern followed by Race 1 at 1:55 PM Easter. The final Indy Lights race of the weekend starts on Sunday at 10:30 AM. Make sure to follow @NGIOnTrack for live tweet coverage of all Indy Lights sessions this weekend.
