With a heavy heart INDYCAR announced today that Justin Wilson, Andretti Autosport driver, has succumbed to his injuries that he received during the ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway.
In the late stages of the race Chip Ganassi Racing driver, Sage Karam, spun coming out of Turn 1 and made heavy contact with the outside wall. As debris scattered over the racing surface, a piece of nose cone from the No. 8 machine was projected into the air as the field sped by, falling in the way of the No. 25 and colliding with Wilson’s helmet.
Wilson was airlifted to Lehigh Valley Health Network Cedar Crest Hospital in Allentown, PA for injuries that were later reported as severe head injuries. He died Monday evening, August 24, 2015. Wilson is survived by his parents Keith and Lynne, brother and fellow racer Stefan, wife Julia, and two daughters.
The family is requesting that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Wilson Children’s Fund care of INDYCAR.
