Johnson Puts IUPUI on Top Friday in Purdue GP Practice

On a beautifully packed Friday at the Purdue Grand Prix circuit, IUPUI showed up in a big way for their first practice of the year with Brenden Johnson topping the time charts. He recorded a time of 26.045, the fastest time of the year and over a half second faster than the rest of today’s participants. Johnson made up 50 percent of the main show last year when Race 59 came down to the final laps between the then-rookie and multi-time champion, Jimmy Simpson.

Camdem Speth continued a strong showing in second with a time of 26.613. The No. 1 team took the opportunity to experiment with a few things on the car, leaving Speth still wanting more out of his Delts Racing machine. His best time was recorded on lap three of his 41-lap effort. Still, Speth has failed to record times outside of the top three in any session so far in 2017.

The Cary Racing duo of Adam Jennerjhan and Kyle Tilley were third and fourth fastest after the session. Jennerjhan as able to record a 26.637 in the No. 24, just 0.161 seconds ahead of Tilley’s No. 14 machine. The Cary Racing teammates continue to look sharp throughout practice with Tilley sparing no time passing competitors on the track en route to recording his fastest times of 2017.

Completing the top five was Shaine Coon in the No. 45 Pythagoras Racing entry. The car changed liveries since it’s first time out and Coon has found improvements throughout the nine-turn circuit. A few moments throughout practice, he was able to hang tight to the rear bumper of some of the session leaders.

A rebroadcast of today’s practice can be found here and on iTunes and many other podcast catchers.

Today’s session featured the biggest field of competitors of 2017 so far with 29 karts recording times. The Purdue Grand Prix returns to the track tomorrow, Saturday April 8, for the longest practice session of the year. Teams will be looking to transfer from shakedown mode to test and tune, especially with warmer, dry weather expected. Tomorrow’s session is set to take the green flag at 10:30 AM ET with Slipstream Network continuing live coverage at
