Lawson Aschenbach took his first win of the season in the No. 10 Blackdog Speed Shop Camaro GT4.R for Round 11 of the Pirelli World Challenge GTS Championship at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Ashenbach’s Camaro reached the finish line two seconds ahead of Ian James in the Panoz Avezzano.
Starting behind pole-sitter Harry Gottsacker in the Ginetta G55, Aschenbach wasted no time getting to the lead at the drop of the green flag. Aschenbach gained the position before a lengthy caution was brought out for a hard crash by Fred Roberts’ Maserati, which was forced off line by Rodrigo Baptista’s Porsche.
Green flag racing resumed with about 23 minutes left on the clock. In just a couple of laps, Aschenbach’s Camaro was leading the field by over six seconds.
An incident involving Tony Gaples’ Camaro, Mark Klenin’s McLaren 570S and Jeff Courtney’s Maserati brought out the second caution of the race. Gaples was able to limp his Camaro back to pit lane, but the Mclaren and Maserati blocked the track near Turn 3.
The restart came with less than 10 minutes on the track. There was nothing Gottsacker could do with the straight-line speed of James’ Panoz. Gottsacker’s Ginetta was passed on the second green lap and relegated to the final step on the podium just eight minutes later.
Geroge Kurtz and Parker Chase completed the Top 5 with McLaren and Ginetta, respectively. Nate Stavey drove though the field to finish sixth after starting 14th. Martin Barkey was pursued by Jason Bell, Bob Michaelian and James Pesek to complete the Top 10. Aschenbach captured the fastest lap and will start on the pole for Race 2.
“I think it’s a testament to everybody at Blackdog Speed Shop, Pratt and Miller, and GM,” said Aschenbach. “These cars were picked up a week before the first race. We’ve been fast, we’ve been on the podium, we just haven’t quite gotten the first win. Just really happy to get one here at Mid-Ohio.”
The next on-track action for the Pirelli World Challenge is scheduled for 4:45 p.m. Eastern tonight. MId-Ohio will host Round 6 for the GT and GTA fields while GT Cup takes to the track for Round 5 of the 2017 championship. The race will be streamed live at world-challenge.com/streamvideo. The GTS field will return to the track tomorrow at 9:05 a.m. for Round 12 of their championship as well.
