ESM Takes First NISMO DPi Win at Road America

Tequila Patron ESM made history at Road America when Pipo Derani and Johannes van Overbeek claimed victory in their No. 22 Nissan-powered NISMO DPi at the Continental Tire Road Race Showcase. Derani took the win by 2.4 seconds in the caution-filled two-hour forty-minute race, the ninth round of the 2017 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

Jordan and Ricky Taylor finished runner-up in their No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillac DPi after leading much of the first two hours. It was an exciting pass on the second restart that allowed Derani to muscle past Jordan Taylor for second, ultimately giving the Brazilian driver the edge to take the win.

Ryan Dalziel’s third-place finish ensured two ESM NISMOs on the podium. The two green ESM machines ran much of the race in tandem, even taking the opportunity to pit in tandem during the opening green-flag pit cycle. The result gave Dalziel and Scott Sharp their second straight podium, third of the season.

Stephen Simpson led for eight laps before his JDC Miller Motorsports Oreca 07 was forced to pit lane for fuel. Simpson stayed out during the third caution while many of the prototype competitors elected to pit under yellow. Simpson and Goikhberg finished eighth overall.

In Prototype Challenge, James French and Pato O’Ward continue their perfect season, claiming their seventh win of the season. BAR1 Motorsports’ Gustavo Yacaman was able to hold onto the same lap as the No. 38, finishing second in class.
